"Jet 228237 21-Piece Cobalt Drill Bit Set" is what's advertised.Ordinary steel with an essentially mythical "cobalt coated" surface is what's in the box.The rainbow colored coating (rainbow is Jet's name for the garish surface staining) is meant to disguise the ordinary HSS material the bits are allegedly made of.The printing on the front of the box says "Cobalt Drill,Bits" but on the back the dark truth comes out."Cobalt-coated HSS drill bits" indeed!Examination of the bit tips suggested sloppy fabrication, being occasionally off-center.The larger sizes were at the upper end of the allowable tolerances in diameter.I have no way to test if these things are even made of ordinary high-speed steel with breaking them, but it wouldn't surprise me if they're made of melted-down Yugos. If you want cobalt drills, buy American.Firms like Irwin make their cobalt drills entirely of cobalt-alloy steel, which means that if they ever need sharpening, there is no coating to grind away.In the case of the Jet 228237, the 'J' stands for junk.I am returnibg my set without putting a single bit into my drill press. I distrust them that much!

The unibit is fantastic for putting holes in thinner material. A plus is the hole will be deburred on the side you are drilling from. When drilling stainless steel (my experience was with 1/8" 316 ss) be careful toreduce RPM as each step goes through. It can work harden the materialeasily, and ruin the bit. A definate "MUST HAVE" for working withelectrical enclosures and panels as well as sheet metal. Just don't throwaway your normal twist drills.

Review of Denali 15-Piece Cobalt Metal Drilling Bit Set

The bits don't slip from the case, and the case holds them well. When closed, it'll look both nice and practical. I feel this is important after having several bit sets, that I threw away their cases because they were not practical. Now, I have them all pooled in one drawer, and it's painful to find the right bit.

They are are well balanced and sharp. I have to test them several times before commenting on them.

Having a pair of bits for small sizes is very useful, because these ones that are most frequently both used and broken for home jobs.

Review of 17 - Pc. Grip - on® Cobalt Silver / Deming Drill Bit Set

I bought this set having run into situations where I would need to enlarge existing holes in wood and steel.These are fairly infrequent, however, having this set has made it quite easy to remedy.

I enjoy that they come in a molded case so the bits aren't clanging around like in a wooden box.The cobalt coating does reduce wear and the cutting edges take on steel with ease, as long as they are well lubricated.

My only complaint thus far is that the shanks are turned round, rather than hex shank or ground with 3 flats.

I would recommend this set based on the fact that you get twice as many bits as most other sets in the same price range (because it goes up by 1/32", rather than just 1/16".Which, because my work in theatrical construction, does not necessitate extreme precision, if one bit of a certain size gets dull, I can use a size bigger or smaller without much frustration.

For serious machinists or precision-related industries, I am sure you already know this set is not for you.But for the the average/intermittent user, this is a great resource to have in your tool box.

I just drilled 30 holes in 17 gauge hot rolled steel (soft steel) and 3 of the drill bit diameters I used resulted in both chipped and crushed cutting edges.To top things off the shafts on all three of the bits are soft as well and the jacob chuck clamp created grooves on the shaft 1/32" of an inch deep.The bits wont even go back in their cheap plastic cartridges because of the mangled shafts.I am looking to replace them with higher quality steel alloy bits asap.

Review of Mibro 492470 17-Piece Cobalt Metal Master Set, 1/6-Inch to 3/8-Inches

I've owned lots of different drill bit sets, including poor quality cheap ones, HSS, titanium-coated, and cobalt. It's easy to get confused with so many things on offer. These Mibros are my favorite, and top other cobalt bits, including the Bosch set (I have them also) for two reasons. Let me explain why.

First, a discussion of drill bits in general. Bits simply labeled HSS (high speed steel) are great for wood and soft metals, but eventually get dull, even in wood if you use them a lot. Titanium coated--well, supposedly hard, but it depends on the quality of the coating. Cheap ones don't last at all, and if you are going for the expensive ones, you might as well just get cobalt, which is even harder. But with cobalt, there's a catch.

Most cobalt bits are made from M-42 cobalt. M-42 describes the specific alloy; M-42 contains 8% cobalt. This is the hardest of the cobalt bit alloys, but it has a disadvantage: it is also the most brittle. Small bits in particular are prone to breakage. This was the case with my Bosch set. After a year or so, several of my smaller bits had broken. It didn't take me long to realize that a very hard bit is a very useless bit when broken!

So I got the Mibros, which are made from M-35 cobalt. M-35 is still quite hard. It contains 5% cobalt--certainly quite enough for anything I drill (which has included drilling out some hardened steel set screws, hardened steel construction components, and stainless). But it is considerably less brittle than M-42 steel. Result--no bit breakages to date.

Another distinct advantage--the 3 flats on bits that are 3/16" or larger. These flats allow the bit to be thoroughly gripped. My Bosch cobalts frequently slipped, resulting in small burrs along the bit shaft that had to be filed down before I could get them back in the bit case--an unneeded annoyance. As for drill quality--extremely smooth.

Conclusion: the Bosches may look like a better buy, but the Mibros in my opinion are worth the extra money. They will last longer because they are less brittle, and you avoid slippage due to the 3 flats. The Canadian manufacturer's thoughtful design and choice of alloy leads to a superior bit set.

Review of DEWALT DW2557 1/4-Inch Hex Shank Drill Bit

I received this yesterday, after several extra days of the USPS sending it all over the West Coast before they decided to finally send it to me, but after using it my ire, first caused by USPS, only increased.

This drill may be able to eat, and I do mean chew, its way through soft wood, but for anything harder you will be wasting your time and money. After drilling five holes through a 18 gauge flat sheet of aluminum it was finished. On the sixth hole it just spun but didn't cut.

This Chinese manufactured drill bit is made out of cheap metal that is just a bit harder than the aluminum that I was trying to drill eight holes in. The last new DeWalt item I bought, a circular saw, was made in Mexico, but has performed well for the past 8 months. But since it now seems that DeWalt has changed to having its products made in China, after more than 40 years of me buying their products, that ends my relationship with DeWalt.

Review of Yukon Tool YT29CD 29 Piece 1/16-Inch to 1/2-Inch Cobalt Twist Drill Bit Assortment in Metal Index

I was moderately satisfied when I first got these - kind of cheaply packaged, but I managed to modify the case so it worked, so I figured I had a set of good, super-hard, super-sharp bits for whenever I needed them.

Well, I don't know what kind of steel a garden hoe is made out of, but it's more that these things can handle.I was pushing hard, changing the angle, tryng slower, trying faster, but all these things did was mostly squeal. At that point I was about convinced that I must have some kind of titanium hoe on my hands!Out of curiosity, I then put in one of my old steel bits (just ordinary hss bits - craftsman or something)and the metal started curling up the way it's supposed to. I had a hole in no time.

There ought to be a law against making the claims made about these bits when they perform as they do.

On the bright side, I won't have to worry about losing them...

Review of DeWalt DW1969 29 Piece Pilot Point Twist Drill Bit Assortment with Metal Index

Pros:

- 1/64" steps
- Very nice plastic case
- "No spin" hex shank (also lets larger bits fit 3/8" chucks)
- Pilot point works as advertised

Cons:

- Gold Ferrous Oxide instead of TiN
- More shank and less flute than your average drill bit

- Design aggressively chews up wood badly (with tear out on exit)
- Not good for soft woods (works better with harder woods)
- Flutes seem less sharp than other brands
- Too much heat concentrated at pilot point risks burning the bit

- Halfway down, bits bite hard into the wood (especially the larger ones) and cause the drill to screw itself into the wood until the chuck hits requiring you to backout and try again. This is very frustrating and is a major design flaw in my opinion. As such these bits are not well suited to hand drills.

If you are set on this purchase, consider the package with the measuring tape:

Review of 10 pc Alloy Screw Extractor Solid Cobalt Left Hand Drill Bits Set

First time I tried the extractor, it busted off inside the bolt. Very hard metal, but so hard that it is quite brittle. Very little amount of free play, and doesn't let you put any torque on the bolt at all, so if it is rusted in there, forget about this set! Seems like a cheap knock off of the ever so popular "easy out" set.

Now I have to figure a way out how to get the stupid thing out of my bolt so I can drill a new hole and tap some new threads in. Can't drill it out because the metal is so hard, it is chewing up my drill bits.

I bought this item after reading several chat room discussions about removing exhaust manifold studs that have broken off in the cylinder head.I'm not sure if it was the fact that the bits were left handed (have to run the drill in reverse) or that they were cobalt coated, or what it was, but, the bit worked great and the extractor backed the stud out with no problem.A couple of notes: 1. I heated the stud with a propane torch and immediately pressed an ordinary household candle to the stud.This causes the melted wax to be sucked into the threads and lubricate them. 2. I did not run the drill at full speed.Patience is a must. 3. I dipped the bit in motor oil for cooling several times during the drilling.This also allows the metal shavings to be pulled out of the hole you are drilling.
